Overall Goal:
The primary objective of this project, “Addition on the Hill,” was to expand and remodel an existing home with an 800 sqft addition featuring a full basement, enabling one-floor living while enhancing functionality and modern comfort. The goal was to create a seamless, open-concept space that accommodates daily family needs, improves accessibility, and integrates high-quality materials for a timeless appeal.

Specific Tasks:

  1. Design Addition for One-Floor Living:
The design centered on adding an 800 sqft extension with a full basement to facilitate single-level living, optimizing the home’s layout for convenience and accessibility. By assessing the site’s hillside location and existing structure, we developed a plan that maximizes space efficiency and flow throughout the home.
  2. Incorporate New Primary Suite and Amenities:
A new primary bedroom and bathroom with a walk-in closet were added, along with relocating the laundry to the first floor from the basement and introducing a new half bathroom. These elements were designed to enhance everyday usability and provide luxurious, practical features tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle.

  3. Demo and Remodel for Open Concept:
The project included demolishing and remodeling interior spaces to create an open-concept floorplan, featuring a new kitchen, pantry, living room with cathedral ceiling, and home office area. This transformation opened up the home, promoting better light, air circulation, and family interaction.

  4. Incorporate Custom Flooring and Staircase:
New character-grade white oak flooring was installed throughout the entire house, paired with a custom white oak staircase featuring wrought iron balustrade and white oak railings. These additions brought warmth and durability, elevating the home’s interior with cohesive, high-end craftsmanship.

Design Style:

The remodel was executed in a transitional style, merging contemporary open spaces and clean lines with traditional elements like white oak finishes and wrought iron details. This balanced approach ensures the home feels modern yet inviting, harmonizing with the surrounding environment for long-term enjoyment.

Design Highlights:

  • Addition Enables One-Floor Living:
The 800 sqft addition with full basement transformed the home into a single-level living space, ideal for accessibility and ease. This setup supports aging in place or multigenerational families, with all essential areas conveniently located on the main floor.
  • Custom Kitchen and Living Areas:
The open-concept design includes a new kitchen, pantry, and living room with cathedral ceiling, plus a dedicated home office area. These spaces foster connectivity and versatility, perfect for cooking, entertaining, and working from home.
  • White Oak Flooring and Staircase:
Character-grade white oak flooring spans the entire house, complemented by a striking new staircase with wrought iron balustrade and white oak railings. Installed, sanded, and finished in-house, these features add natural beauty and character to every room.
  • New Front Porch Addition:
A welcoming new front porch was built with composite decking, railings, and a v-match pine ceiling, enhancing curb appeal and providing an outdoor extension of the home’s interior style.

This project successfully expanded and revitalized the home on the hill, delivering a functional, one-floor living environment that meets the family’s evolving needs while showcasing expert craftsmanship from design through completion.
